Dr Tshegang Mofokeng is an experienced and compassionate Specialist General Surgeon with core competencies in minimal access surgery, endovenous procedures for varicose veins, basic surgery, gastroenterology and trauma.
His academic journey is a testament to his resilience and dedication. Despite facing significant personal and financial challenges early on, he went on to complete Bachelor of Science (BSc) and Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degrees, followed later by a Master of Medicine in Surgery (MMed (Surg)) from the University of the Free State (UFS).
Dr Mofokeng's medical career began as an Anatomy Technician at UFS, where he also distinguished himself as a part-time educator and lecturer. His tenure as a Medical Intern at Boitumelo Regional Hospital in Kroonstad was marked by his role as Interns’ Captain, reflecting his natural leadership abilities.

The decision to specialise in surgery was influenced by his internship experiences, where he found himself drawn to the operating theatre's dynamic environment. His empathetic nature initially drew him towards paediatrics but his fascination with the definitive nature of surgical interventions, solidified his path in surgery—a field where he could use both his brain and hands to provide ultimate treatments for various conditions.
The breadth of Dr Mofokeng's experience is notable, having served as a Community Service Medical Officer in Primary Health Care and as a Medical Officer at Botshabelo District Hospital. His surgical acumen was further honed as a Surgery Medical Officer and later as a Surgery Registrar at Universitas Academic Hospital.
His commitment to surgery led him to become a Specialist Surgeon in private practice, where he has been serving the Vaal community since 2013.
Additionally, Dr Mofokeng has shared his expertise as a Part-time Consultant at Sebokeng Hospital. As Director at Care Cure Subacute Hospital and Vereeniging Mediclinic, he has demonstrated his leadership and administrative skills.
Dr Mofokeng has presented his academic work both nationally and internationally, and has published several papers in these arenas. His notable contributions include research on cystic lesions of the biliary tree, which have been recognized at conferences such as the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association Congress.
He continues to share his knowledge as a surgery tutor for the NMFC Programme at the Department of Family Medicine, Wits University. His dedication to the advancement of medical practice is further evidenced by his completion of a course in Good Clinical Practice for Clinical Trial Sites.

Outside the hospital, Dr Mofokeng is a family man with three teenage children, a daughter and two sons. A lover of the outdoors, he is an avid participant in family potjiekos competitions, boasting three wins with dishes featuring wildebeest, impala and eland. His leisure time is often spent on 4x4 trails, and he has acquired a hunting license, further underlining his adventurous spirit.
